"Employment in the manufacturing and services sectors improved simultaneously for the first time after the COVID-19 outbreak, though the improvements were not strong," said Wang Zhe, a senior economist at Caixin Insight Group.

"Driven by the planned 70 billion yuan investment and the evolution of the industrial cluster, the figures are poised to top 300 billion yuan and 200 billion yuan, respectively, within five years," he said.

"Earnings picked up as macro policies to stabilize growth and corporations' efforts to counter impacts of trade tensions took effect," said Liu Chunsheng, an associate professor at the Beijing-based Central University of Finance and Economics.

"Despite the decline, China's services trade saw a largely stable trend in the first half. Services exports outperformed imports, with the services trade deficit narrowing by 46.1 percent from the same period of last year to 401.7 billion yuan," said Xian Guoyi, director-general of the ministry's department of trade in services and commercial services.

"Efforts are needed from all parties, including the government, schools, medical institutions and especially students and their parents," he said.
